Two artificial turf quotes can land on your kitchen table with prices hundreds or even thousands of dollars apart, and at first glance they look like they cover the same job. They usually do not. The difference is almost always hiding in the details: the turf itself, how the edges are held down, what goes underneath, which infill gets brushed in, and what happens if something goes wrong a year from now. Those details decide the quality, appearance and long-term performance of your lawn, so they deserve a closer look before you make a decision.
In this short video, the Texas Turf Diva walks through the five questions she tells every homeowner to ask before hiring an artificial turf installer. Below, we break each question down so you know what a good answer sounds like, what a vague answer sounds like, and how to compare quotes side by side, whether you are planning a backyard lawn, a dog run or a full pet turf installation in The Woodlands, Spring, Conroe or the greater Houston area.
Question 1: What Are the Turf's Face Weight, Total Weight and Pile Height?
This is the first question because it tells you what product you are actually buying. Many quotes simply say “premium turf” or list a square-foot price with no product name at all. That makes it impossible to compare one bid against another.
Here is what each number means:
- Face weight: the weight of the grass fibers per square yard, not counting the backing. In general, more fiber means a fuller, more durable lawn.
- Total weight: face weight plus the backing. It gives you a sense of how substantial the whole product is.
- Pile height: how tall the blades stand. Taller pile looks lush, while shorter, denser pile is often easier to keep clean in high-traffic and pet areas.
There is no single “right” number. The right turf depends on how you use the space. A family with two large dogs needs something different than a front-yard landscape turf project. What matters is that the contractor names the exact product and its specs in writing, so you can compare apples to apples. Our guide to choosing the right artificial turf goes deeper on matching the product to your yard.
While you are at it, ask to see and feel product samples. Specs on paper are helpful, but holding two samples side by side is the fastest way to compare fiber feel, color and durability for your family, kids and pets.
The Texas Turf Diva: 5 questions to ask your turf contractor
Question 2: How Will the Edges Be Secured, Especially Along a Fence?
Edges are where many turf installations fail first. If the perimeter is not properly secured, you can end up with lifting seams, curling edges, gaps along the fence line, or a spot where your dog learns to dig underneath.
Ask the installer to explain exactly how they will finish every edge of your project: along fences, flower beds, patios, sidewalks and pavers. A good answer is specific. A vague answer like “we tack it down” deserves a follow-up question.
Fence lines matter most for pet owners. Dogs patrol fences, and any weakness along that edge gets tested daily. If you are planning pet turf or a dog run, ask how the contractor will discourage digging and keep the turf tight to the fence.
Question 3: What Base Material, Depth and Drainage Plan Are Included?
What goes under your turf matters as much as the turf itself. The sub-base is what keeps your lawn level, firm and draining after a Texas downpour. It is also the part of the job you will never see once the turf is installed, which is exactly why it is the easiest place for a low bid to cut corners.
Ask every contractor three things:
- What base material will you use? Get the actual material name, not just "base."
- How deep will the base be once compacted? Ask whether that depth is consistent across the whole yard.
- What is the drainage plan? Find out how water will move off and through the turf, and where it will go.
At EZ Turf The Woodlands, the sub-base is where we spend a lot of our attention, because heavy Gulf Coast rain is the real test of any installation. Our full process covers site clearing, grading and base installation before the turf ever comes off the roll. You can see how we approach it on our residential lawn installation page.
A thinner base may save money on day one, but it can lead to soft spots, puddling and low areas that are expensive to fix later. When you compare quotes, make sure each one lists the base material and depth in writing.
Question 4: Which Infill Product Is Included, and How Much?
Infill is the granular material brushed down into the turf fibers. It helps the blades stand upright, adds weight so the turf stays in place, and protects the backing. For pet areas, some infill products are also designed to help manage odor.
Two quotes can both say “infill included” and mean very different things. One might include a specialty product applied at a full rate, while another uses a generic product at a light rate. Ask for:
- The infill product name
- How much will be applied across your project
- Why that product was chosen for your yard, kids or pets

Question 5: What Do the Turf and Workmanship Warranties Cover?
Most homeowners hear “it comes with a warranty” and stop asking questions. Do not stop there. There are usually two separate warranties involved:
- The turf warranty, which typically comes from the manufacturer and covers the product itself, such as fading or fiber breakdown.
- The workmanship warranty, which comes from the installer and covers the installation, such as seams, edges and base issues.
Ask how long each one lasts, what it covers, what it excludes, and how you would file a claim. A manufacturer’s warranty on the turf does not help you if the problem is a seam that was poorly installed. Get both in writing before you sign.
Bonus: Questions to Ask About the Contractor Itself
The five questions above focus on the job. Before you sign, it also pays to ask a few questions about the company doing the work. Good artificial turf contractors are happy to answer them.
- How much artificial turf installation experience does your team have, and who will actually be on site?
- Can you share photos of recent projects similar to mine, or references from past clients?
- Will I get a written estimate that lists every material, quantity and step of the installation process?
- What maintenance and care will my turf need after installation, and do you offer cleaning or repairs later?
- What is your timeline from signing to a finished yard?
Reading reviews from local homeowners is a smart part of your research, too. You can see what our customers say on our testimonials page. And because artificial grass is low maintenance, not no maintenance, it helps to know the routine before you commit. Our turf maintenance tips cover the basics.
How to Compare Artificial Turf Quotes Side by Side
Once you have asked all five questions, line your quotes up and look at the full scope, not just the final price. A lower bid that leaves out base depth, uses less infill or skips edge details may cost you more over the life of your lawn. The best value is the contractor whose answers are clear, specific and written down.
Ask each contractor to put these items in writing:
- Turf product name, face weight, total weight and pile height
- Edge securing method for fences, beds and hardscape
- Base material, compacted depth and drainage plan
- Infill product name and quantity
- Turf warranty and workmanship warranty terms
- Timeline, cleanup and any post-install maintenance support

Frequently Asked Questions About Hiring a Turf Contractor
What should I ask an artificial turf contractor before hiring?
Ask about the turf’s face weight, total weight and pile height; how the edges will be secured, especially along fences; the base material, depth and drainage plan; which infill product is included and how much; and what the turf and workmanship warranties cover. Get every answer in writing.
Why are artificial turf quotes so different in price?
Quotes often differ because of the turf product, the depth and type of base material, the infill product and quantity, how edges are finished, and warranty coverage. A lower price can mean a thinner base or fewer materials, so compare the full scope of work, not just the total.
What is face weight on artificial turf?
Face weight is the weight of the turf fibers per square yard, not including the backing. It is one way to compare how full and durable different turf products are. The right face weight depends on how you will use the area.
Why does the base matter so much for artificial grass?
The base keeps your turf level, firm and draining. In The Woodlands and the Houston area, heavy rain quickly exposes a weak base through puddling, soft spots and uneven areas. Always ask for the base material and compacted depth in writing.
What questions should pet owners ask about turf installation?
Pet owners should ask how the turf will be secured along fence lines to discourage digging, how the drainage plan handles pet urine and rinsing, and which infill is best for pet areas. Durable turf and a solid sub-base also matter for active dogs.
What is the difference between a turf warranty and a workmanship warranty?
A turf warranty usually comes from the manufacturer and covers the product itself. A workmanship warranty comes from the installer and covers the installation, such as seams, edges and the base. Ask how long each lasts and what each one covers.
